KEYS — Keys School Superintendent Jerry Hood will be traveling to Washington, D.C., April 15-16, for an Impact Aid Meeting.
The Keys Board of Education approved the trip in its regular meeting Monday evening.
“All superintendents go to this meeting,” he said. “It’s good to talk to our representatives and senators to help keep Impact Aid.”
According to the U.S. Department of Education website, this means many local school districts across the U.S. include within their boundaries parcels of land that are owned by the federal government or that have been removed from the local tax rolls by the federal government, including Indian lands.
This can pose difficulties when they are sometimes operating with less local revenue than is available to other school districts, because the federal property is exempt from local property taxes.
Te board voted to approve the hiring of Melinda Latty as a pre-kindergarten teacher assistant for the rest of the year. Board members approved the application for the Oklahoma Race to the Top Grant.
According to Hood, the grant could bring 175 million to Oklahoma’s education through stimulus money.
“It doesn’t guarantee anything,” he said. “But it’s a good idea to apply.”
