VIAN – Two Alabama men were injured in a motor vehicle accident in the early morning hours on Sunday, just south of Vian in Sequoyah County.
Randy Neal Whitt, 54, and Altie Eugene Wilkerson, 51, both of Oneonta, Ala., are in stable condition after the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado Z71 Whitt was driving veered off the roadway on the right side while westbound.
After sliding for about 324 feet, the truck went airborne for 85 feet and impacted the roadway of State Highway 82, then struck a guardrail and came to rest.
Whitt was transported to Sequoyah Memorial Hospital in Sallisaw, then taken to St. John Hospital in Tulsa, where he was admitted with head and internal trunk injuries. Wilkerson was transported to Sparks Medical Center in Fort Smith, Ark., then taken to Little Rock Medical Center, where he was admitted with head, arm and leg injuries. Seat belts were in use, and airbags were deployed.
The crash was investigated by Trooper Sheldon Dobbs of the Sequoyah County Detachment, who was assisted by the Vian police and fire departments. According to Dobbs, the cause of the accident was inattention.
