Robber hits bank in Keys

By TRAVINA COLEMAN

The Bank of Commerce in Keys was robbed at approximately 6 p.m. Monday evening by a man brandishing a gun.

Cherokee County Undersheriff Jason Chennault said the suspect entered through an unsecured back door wielding a dark revolver. He forced the three bank employees to get in a closet as he rummaged through all the registers.

Employees waited several minutes before venturing out and calling law enforcement officials.

The suspect is described as a white male, dressed in black and wearing a hooded sweatshirt. He made his exit through the door he entered and walked across the parking lot before climbing into the passenger side of a dark-colored Toyota Sequoia.

“We don’t know which way he went,” Chennault said.

None of the employees were harmed, but the suspect made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Deputies Jim Burton, Bob Lewandowski, Cody Warren and Capt. Bob Sanders responded to the call, according to Chennault.

“We are going through the surveillance video footage right now,” he said.

“The FBI is assisting in the investigation, since it was a federally insured bank.”

Chennault said they department will release the amount of money taken from the Bank of Commerce, after getting permission from the bank and the FBI.

Officials ask anyone with information about the robbery to contact Capt. Bob Sanders with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.
