Man found guilty of leaving scene

Press staff reports

A judge Thursday found a Cherokee County man guilty of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident.

William James Christopher Lewis was found guilty after a day-long trial by judge. Special District Judge Sandy Crosslin allowed Lewis, 34, to remain free on his current own recognizance bond after announcing her verdict.

She ordered him to return to court Jan. 8 for sentencing. A pre-sentence investigation will be conducted. The charge was filed in 2007 after a November 2006 crash.

Assistant District Attorney B.J. Baker asked Crosslin to set a bond amount for Lewis to post since he has been convicted. Defense attorney Crystal Jackson argued for Lewis to be allowed to stay on the own recognizance bond because he has made previous court appearances.

Crosslin told Lewis she would allow him to remain on the own recognizance bond, but he faced the possibility of another charge if he fails to appear.
