Molester charged for failing to register

By BOB GIBBINS

A Fort Gibson man was charged this week with failure to register as a sex offender in Cherokee County District Court.

Jared Ray Matthews, 24, was charged with the felony offense after Sheriff’s Deputy James Brown filed a report with prosecutors.

Matthews has Muskogee County convictions for sodomy, lewd molestation and lewd or indecent proposals or acts to a child. Department of Corrections records indicate he also has a conviction for failing to register as a sex offender.

The sex offender re- gistry states he is to be registering for lewd or indecent acts or proposals to a child.

Matthews allegedly failed to register in Cherokee County and was sent a letter by the sheriff’s office on Aug. 7. Brown’s report states Matthews is a Level 3 offender and must register for the rest of his life.

He is supposed to have been registering as a sex offender since Feb. 23.

DOC records show Matthews is on probation in Muskogee County until March 2012.

Failure to register as a sex offender is punishable by imprisonment for up to five years and/or a fine of up to $5,000.

Special District Judge Sandy Crosslin set a $10,000 bond on an arrest warrant issued for Matthews.
