Charges expected in rape incident

Press staff reports

Formal charges are expected to be filed against a Cherokee County man arrested Monday on a first-degree rape charge.

Robert Nathaniel Wheeler, 35, came to the sheriff’s office for questioning after the victim reported the incident Sunday. The assault allegedly occurred Friday.

The woman said the assault took place with her children in the next room.

A probable cause affidavit by Sheriff’s Investigator Becky Thompson states Wheeler was arrested for first-degree rape and domestic abuse in the presence of a minor child.

Wheeler denied the assault when asked by Thompson.

An appearance bond was not set for Wheeler Monday afternoon. He will be formally arraigned after charges are filed in connection with the assault.

Wheeler has no previous felony record in Cherokee County.
