Cherokee County investigators have turned over a report to the district attorney’s office concerning a mule that has allegedly been creating problems for neighbors.
The mule apparently lives on land west of Tahlequah, and the recent incident isn’t the first time it has run afoul of people. Hulbert police answered a call about the animal last month.
Julie Hughes told deputies she was riding one horse and walking another when the mule suddenly charged across a field and began jumping fences to get to the horse Hughes was walking.
Julie and Inez Hughes tried to ward off the mule by striking it with a whip and reins from the horse.
The women said the mule tried to breed with the horse Hughes was walking.
Mules are generally sterile, but they don’t know that, and like other mammals, they have the natural drive to procreate.
Urges notwithstanding, the spooked horse fled from the mule’s advances, although the women managed to catch it after several minutes.
A man eventually came by on a four-wheeler and persuaded the mule to leave the horses alone.
According to reports, the mule has bothered people in the area on other occasions.
