Cherokee County investigators arrested a former Cookson water district bookkeeper Tuesday on allegations she took approximately $15,000 while working for Rural Water District 13.
Shannon P. Hahn, 27, was arrested at her job site by Investigator Bob Sanders, and booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center on embezzlement and forgery charges. Sanders said he has submitted a report to the district attorney’s office for a determination on formal charges.
Hahn was the bookkeeper and office manager for the water district since fall 2008. Sanders said Hahn diverted $14,000 to a bank in New Jersey.
She was also converting checks and cash to her own use and forged the name of a board member on petty cash checks. Reports indicate she may have taken cash for water meters and not turned in the money to the appropriate place. The meters were sold for $1,000 each.
Sanders said the exact total allegedly taken by Hahn is not known at this time. Hahn, who has no criminal record in Cherokee County, has not spoken with law enforcement personnel about the alleged embezzlement.
