Courthouse mold just on first floor

Press staff reports

TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS — The plastic is gone from the walls, and workers are filling in holes dug behind the Cherokee County Courthouse to complete the cleanup process on a case of toxic mold.

The mold was on the east wall of City Hall. Plastic was on the wall for several days to keep the substance from becoming airborne, Assistant City Administrator Kevin Smith said in a previous interview.

Cherokee County Commission Chairman Doug Hubbard said Wednesday morning that he has not been made aware of any mold issues on the second or third floor of the building. Those floors house county offices and the district court.

Much of the east wall of City Hall is below ground, and water retention outside the building helped worsen the mold problem.

The remediation project is not complete. Some portions of the east wall still need repairs, and the parking area behind the courthouse is being refilled so it can be recovered and employees can return to parking there.

An independent study revealed aspergillus versicolor on a wall in at least one of the city offices.
