Bogus checks draw two dozen charges for woman

TAHLEQUAH — An area woman is facing nearly two dozen charges for allegedly presenting bad checks to retailers last February and March.

Delisa Ann Mackey, 21, faces 21 individual counts of obtaining cash or merchandise by bogus check or false pretenses, and two additional charges related to the false presentation of checks.

Prosecutors allege Mackey wrote 23 checks totaling more than $3,000 at local businesses such as Reasor’s, Tahlequah Cable TV, Dano’s, Save-A-Lot, and other, knowing she did not have sufficient funds to cover the drafts. About $1,800 was written on a total of three separate checks Mackey allegedly used at Reasor’s, court documents show.

A judge recently issued a warrant for Mackey’s arrest based on the charges.

Mackey was also charged last August with exploitation of an elderly person or disabled adult. Prosecutors said an elderly man had sought help with his cleaning, cooking, and various errands. He hired a woman, and later determined there to be enough work for two people, so the woman later brought Mackey in to assist with the work.

The women then allegedly took money from the man, though they claimed he had loaned them the funds. The victim told investigators he did not loan the women the money.

Court records show Mackey is set to appear in Cherokee County District Court next month on the exploitation charges.
