A judge has ordered a Tahlequah man’s bank account to be frozen after detectives voiced concerns the man may have purchased airline tickets and fled the country.
Roxie Lee Wagers, 71, was charged in late December with nine counts of lewd molestation and one count of attempted solicitation of a minor for indecent exposure.
A warrant was issued for Wagers’ arrest after he was formally charged, but he remains at large. Tahlequah Police Detective Thomas Donnell filed a request in Cherokee County District Court asking for a search warrant of Wagers’ bank accounts, including checking, savings, escrow, stocks, bonds and others that might assist Wagers in eluding arrest.
Donnell said he has information that Wagers used money and bank accounts to buy airline tickets to other countries to avoid apprehension, and that Wagers has access to other money through his accounts. He believes Wagers left Cherokee County about a week after an investigation began into the molestation.
The judge’s order commands any and all of Wagers’ bank records dating back to Oct. 1, 2012, to be frozen, and for authorities to return to the judge the information gathered as part of the search warrant.
Authorities alleged Wagers inappropriately touched as many as three underage girls over a period of seven years, and offered to pay $17,000 if the allegations were kept secret.
Formal charges appear to be based on the alleged molestation of one girl, who was 9 years old when the alleged incidents began back in 2006. Authorities have said charges are also possible in connection with the other two children.
Wagers allegedly admitted to touching one of the girls and told the victim’s father he would give the family money if they wouldn’t file charges. The alleged confession and offer of payment was recorded, according to Donnell.
Donnell said Wagers is also accused of enticing the girls to model underwear he had purchased for them, asking them to “put on a show” for him.
Prosecutors allege Wagers sexually assaulted the victim listed in court documents multiple times over the last seven years, and also exposed himself to the girl while he was committing a lewd act to himself.
Each charge of lewd molestation is punishable by three to 20 years in prison, while attempted solicitation of a minor for indecent exposure is punishable by not less than 25 years.
