Warrant issued for accused child abuser, puppy killer

TAHLEQUAH — A district judge on Thursday issued a bench warrant for a Rose man who failed to appear for his court date on felony child abuse and assault charges.

Brandon Keith Hubbard, 29, of Rose, is accused of beating a woman and child and forcing the child to watch as he decapitated a puppy.

A judge issued a bench warrant for Hubbard for failure to appear last October, but later recalled the warrant when authorities discovered Hubbard was in jail in Mayes County.

Then on Thursday, District Judge Darrell Shepherd issued another bench warrant when Hubbard failed to appear in court for a jury sounding docket. Court records show Hubbard has been tentatively set for trial later this month.

Hubbard is facing formal charges of child abuse by injury, domestic assault and battery in the presence of a minor, and cruelty to animals. He was charged after investigators looked into allegations that an 8-year-old girl had been beaten with a whip and broom handle.

The girl allegedly suffered “severe bruising,” and a woman was also injured at the hands of Hubbard. Investigators said Hubbard would force the child to watch as he beat the woman, and would also force the woman to beat the child. If the woman refused, Hubbard allegedly assaulted her with a braided whip he kept at the home.

Court documents also detail how Hubbard allegedly grabbed a puppy away from the girl sometime last June, held it down, and cut its head off with an ax because the girl had not cleaned up after it.

Hubbard has pleaded not guilty.
