Man gets 30 years for drugs, firearms

TAHLEQUAH — A Welling man pleaded guilty to drug and firearms charges Thursday and received a 30-year prison sentence.

Larry Earl Matlock, 54, will spend 18 years in prison, with the remaining 12 years suspended.

“He was responsible for a lot of the meth on the dirt roads in Welling, and now he won’t be on the dirt roads for quite some time,” said Assistant District Attorney B.J. Baker.

Matlock was facing charges of manufacturing methamphetamine, possession of a firearm in commission of a felony, possession of a police scanner during commission of a felony, and possession of meth with intent to distribute.

Matlock was one of the first people arrested during a county-wide warrant sweep last September. Authorities were looking to arrest Matlock on four outstanding warrants and had to force him out of his Welling-area travel trailer after about 30 minutes of trying to convince him to emerge on his own.

After he was in custody, investigators discovered a red-phosphorus meth lab inside the trailer.

Aside from his recent arrest, Matlock had been charged in Cherokee County three other times for  manufacturing a controlled dangerous substance.

What do you think of Sen. McCain's proposal to allow cable TV channels to be sold a la carte (individually, rather than in bundles with a lot of channels no one wants)? Bear in mind some less popular channels could go by the wayside with no bundling support, and that while overall packages should theoretically decrease in cost, individual channels might cost more.

Strongly in favor of a la carte.
