Burglary and child-abuse charges have been filed against a local woman accused of forcing her way into a home and assaulting a 15-year-old girl.
Cordia Bell Barnes, 53, allegedly entered a residence at Garden Walk Apartment on Jan. 29 and assaulted the teen.
According to Cherokee County Sheriff’s Deputy Dexter Scott’s report of the alleged attack, the victim said she heard someone knocking on the door. But before she could get to the door, it flew open, and Barnes entered the apartment, looking for her granddaughter.
The teen told Barnes several times she didn’t know where Barnes’ granddaughter was, but Barnes allegedly continued to yell, then grabbed the victim by the neck, causing her to fall.
The victim was able to run and call for help.
Scott said the girl had red marks on her neck when he arrived at the scene.
Child abuse by injury is punishable by up to life in prison, a year in the county jail, and a fine of not $500 to $5,000. First-degree burglary is punishable by seven to 20 years in prison.
