Owner charged in death of bulldog

Officers say the animal died of starvation and thirst.

Cherokee County prosecutors have charged an area man with cruelty to animals after an investigation by the sheriff’s office indicated one of his dogs died of starvation and thirst.

An arrest warrant was issued Thursday for Charles D. Gritts, 72, after the charges were filed. Special District Judge Sandy Crosslin set a $10,000 bond on the warrant.

Authorities allege Gritts failed to feed and water a dog between Nov. 1 and Dec. 22, 2009, and the animal eventually died. A meter reader and Humane Society of Cherokee County representative met sheriff’s deputies at the residence, where they also found a basset hound in bad condition.

Court documents indicate several other animals were on the property, and a goat was chained there. Reports state the dead animal appeared to be a bulldog.

Gritts told investigators he had been caring for the dogs and he knew he could be prosecuted for neglecting the animals. He complied with a request to feed the animals while law enforcement officials were present.

Reports also state Gritts was told a report of the apparent animal abuse would be filed. He allegedly tried to tell investigators the dog died of worms.

Cruelty to animals is punishable by imprisonment for up to five years and/or a fine of up to $500.

Assistant District Attorney David Pierce is prosecuting the case.

The use of cell phones while driving is increasingly becoming an issue. What do you think about cell phone use by emergency personnel, like law enforcement officers, EMTs, firemen, etc.?

• If the law allows the common citizen to use cell phones while driving, emergency personnel should be able to also.
• Emergency personnel should be held to a higher standard. Since they are often driving faster than normal, they should not be allowed to use cell phones while driving, even if other citizens can.
• They should be allowed to use them like anyone else, but their host entities (hospitals, fire departments, cities, etc.) should carry extra insurance for this reason.
• Don't know.
