Woman accused of exploiting aging father

A Grove woman faces charges in Cherokee County after an investigation by the Department of Human Services indicated she took advantage of her elderly father.

Prosecutors filed a count of exploitation of a vulnerable adult against Annetta Johnston, 60, Thursday.

The alleged incident occurred between Sept. 1 and Dec. 1 and involves Johnston’s father, Clifford Green. She will be formally arraigned at a later date.

Authorities say Johnston paid partial amounts on Green’s bills in September but then failed to pay any of the amount owed in October and November. They also allege Johnston took the money and converted it to her own use.

Exploitation or abuse of a vulnerable adult is punishable by imprisonment for up to 10 years and/or a fine of up to $10,000. Representatives of DHS and Grace Living Center are listed as state witnesses.

Assistant District Attorney David Pierce is prosecuting the case.

The use of cell phones while driving is increasingly becoming an issue. What do you think about cell phone use by emergency personnel, like law enforcement officers, EMTs, firemen, etc.?

• If the law allows the common citizen to use cell phones while driving, emergency personnel should be able to also.
• Emergency personnel should be held to a higher standard. Since they are often driving faster than normal, they should not be allowed to use cell phones while driving, even if other citizens can.
• They should be allowed to use them like anyone else, but their host entities (hospitals, fire departments, cities, etc.) should carry extra insurance for this reason.
• Don't know.
