TAHLEQUAH —
Two men were arrested Wednesday evening after they tried to rob a man as he left a Welling convenience store.
Martin Junior Torres, 21, and Jacob James Mankiller, 22, were both held at the Cherokee County Detention Center on charges of attempted strong-armed robbery and possession of a loaded firearm during commission of a felony.
Mankiller and Torres allegedly approached Eugene Vance Wednesday evening as Vance was leaving Speedy’s, east of Tahlequah on State Highway 51.
The two threatened Vance and demanded he give them beer, though Vance had no beer and told them so.
The two men then allegedly asked Vance what else he had in his truck. Vance told authorities he believed they were going to rob him, so he reached into his truck and pretended he had a weapon. Torres and Mankiller then fled in a vehicle.
Vance followed the two men into Tahlequah, where city officers stopped the suspects and arrested them.
Police said Torres and Mankiller were intoxicated, and had a loaded pistol in their vehicle.
Officers found four bullets in Mankiller’s pocket while he was being booked into CCDC.
