TAHLEQUAH —
Prosecutors have charged a Tahlequah man allegedly responsible for what police called a “home invasion” in January.
Brandon J. Hestwood, 29, is facing felony counts of first-degree burglary and child abuse by injury, along with a misdemeanor count of assault and battery.
According to Tahlequah Police Lt. Clint Keys’ report, officers were sent to a home on West North Street on Jan. 12, at about 1:50 a.m., after a woman said a truck pulled into her yard, and a man – later identified as Hestwood – got out.
Hestwood allegedly went to the woman’s door and threatened to kill her and her son, then kicked the door open, barged into the home, and grabbed the woman’s son by his throat.
The woman told police Hestwood tried to drag her son outside to the truck, but she struggled to fight off her aggressor. The woman said Hestwood then knocked her to the ground. When she called 911, the man and two others who were with him got into a truck and sped away.
At the time, the victims didn’t know Hestwood’s last name, but a few days after the incident, officers were given a possible identity. Police then located a photo of Hestwood, and the alleged victims fingered him as the man who broke into their home and tried to drag the child away.
Burglary is punishable by seven to 20 years in prison, while child abuse by injury is punishable by up to life in prison and a fine of $500 to $5,000. Misdemeanor assault and battery is punishable by up to 90 days in prison and a fine of up to $1,000.
