The resignation of Hulbert Public Schools Board of Education President Rick Gassaway was unanimously accepted during Monday’s meeting at the HPS Auditorium.
Appointed board member Curtis Medlin was absent and did not participate in the vote, leaving board vice president Linda Baker, board clerk JuaNita Keener and member Kathy Ritchie to exercise the official motion to vacate Gassaway’s position as board president.
The vote came after a 67-minute executive session that also included discussion to accept the resignation of computer technician Daniel Buchanan, who accepted a similar position with Bishop Kelly High School in Tulsa, said HPS Superintendent Dr. Marilyn Dewoody.
“We hate to see [Buchanan] go,” she said.
Gassaway’s resignation comes after a November domestic disturbance incident involving alleged injury to a female and male victim. The female’s shoulder was reported to have been injured by Gassaway during a physical altercation, while the boy had also been injured, deputies said. Gassaway initially refused to comply with deputies’ commands to exit the residence, but eventually came out on to the porch where he was later handcuffed and taken to W.W. Hastings Hospital for evaluation, then sent to a Tulsa treatment facility for further evaluation.
Cherokee County Commission Bobby Potts spoke to the board about property in Mt. Zion previously thought to be owned by the Cherokee Nation. Potts said he contacted the Cherokee Nation and confirmed the rural school district owns the one-acre property, which Potts asked the board to donate to the county to increase acreage for Mt. Zion cemetery. As the information was presented during public comment, the board could not take any official action on Potts’ request.
