Business nixes relocation to city
A prospective tenant in the Tahlequah Industrial Authority has withdrawn its name from consideration, TIA members said Wednesday.
TIA Trustee David Moore said Advanced Fibers and Powders, LLC, thanked the authority for showing the company the Industrial Park, but asked to be withdrawn from further deliberation.
Some members of the community – including one who sent an e-mail to the Daily Press – expressed concerns about the company’s locating its new plant here.
“It was good for us to go through,” Moore said of the presentation to AF&P.; “Maybe it [the company] wasn’t a good fit for us.”
One local resident, Ed Brocksmith, wrote James Hnat, AF&P; manager, and said he believed the company could damage the ecosystem of the Illinois River.
“I’m certain your company is a very fine one and would not damage our environment on purpose,” Brocksmith wrote. “However, in the interest of Tahlequah’s unique quality of life and our special need for clean industry, I sincerely hope that you will not locate your proposed toxic waste recycling plant here. The Illinois River and Lake Tenkiller have plenty of pollution sources without a smokestack industry processing toxic waste.”
Hnat said during his meeting with the TIA earlier this month there would be little smoke, and it would dissipate quickly. He also said the material coming in would be in sealed containers until the process begins inside the plant.
TIA Trustee Jerry Cook said the earlier meeting with AF&P; shows Tahlequah is “on the radar screen.”
The Daily Press e-mailed Hnat earlier this week, asking for a response to Brocksmith’s concerns.
“The primary purpose of our visit to the Tahlequah Industrial Park was to determine if it would be a suitable location for our business,” Hnat wrote in his response. “We have assessed the site and have determined that this is not the case.”
The TIA also held an executive session to consider the purchase of property. TIA Chairman Jeff Reasor said the board would take no action as a result of the executive session.
