TAHLEQUAH —
Authorities last week arrested a convicted sex offender who allegedly moved to a new residence and failed to notify authorities.
Leonard Mitchell, 22, is charged with failing to register as required under the Sex Offenders Registration Act. Court documents show Mitchell was convicted in 2010 of lewd or indecent acts or proposals to a child.
Mitchell’s most recent registration documents listed his address on Tarkington Street, but Sheriff’s Investigator James Brown recently learned Mitchell moved out of that location about a month ago.
Investigators learned Mitchell was possibly living in apartments in the Southridge addition. He was arrested last week and held on a $20,000 bond. Mitchell could also face charges for being a registered sex offender and living in close proximity to a school.
Information filed with Mitchell’s latest charges indicates his sentence could be enhanced due to his previous convictions, including the lewd acts or proposals and a subsequent charge of failing to register that was filed in 2011.
Mitchell pleaded not guilty to the newest charge and was ordered back for a felony sounding docket Feb. 27 at 9 a.m. in Cherokee County District Court.
According to court records, Mitchell was originally charged in 2010 after a 14-year-old girl said Mitchell forced her to have sex.
Mitchell allegedly admitted to detectives he had sex with the victim, but told them the girl claimed she was 18 years old.
