TAHLEQUAH —
A Hulbert man is facing felony charges for allegedly taking a concealed knife into the Cherokee County Detention Center on June 6.
Ernest Dale Billups, 40, is charged with bringing contraband into a jail, threatening to perform an act of violence, resisting an officer, and malicious injury to property under $1,000. Prosecutors allege Billups concealed a knife in the crack of his buttocks and took it into CCDC when he was being booked in early June.
Billups had been arrested for allegedly threatening to kill a woman, and for resisting officers when they arrived at the scene. Officers claim Billups repeatedly attempted to twist and pull away from arresting officers.
Billups also allegedly broke the glass on the front door of the home belonging to the woman he’d threatened.
Bringing contraband into a jail is punishable by one to five years in state prison and/or a fine of $100 to $1,000. Threatening to perform an act of violence is a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in prison; resisting an officer is also a misdemeanor, which is punishable by up to a year in prison and/or a fine of up to $500; and malicious injury to property under $1,000 is also a misdemeanor punishable by up a year in the county jail and/or a fine of up to $500.
A $20,000 bond has been set on Billups’ arrest, and he has been ordered to have no contact with the female victim involved in the case.
