Council OKs work on joint disaster plan with school

TAHLEQUAH — Tahlequah city councilors gave the OK Thursday night for a planning service to create a multi-hazard mitigation plan.

The agreement allows the city and Tahlequah Public Schools to work together to have the mitigation plan created. Tahlequah-Cherokee County Emergency Management Director Gary Dotson said federal law requires the plan to be updated every five years.

Dotson had been given permission earlier this year to work with county officials in seeking a grant for the project, but he told councilors Thursday that no grant money was appropriated in Oklahoma this year.

He said the grant funding is based on the number of disasters that occur within the state.

The city will pay nearly $33,000 for its part of the project, which will be taken out of the operating reserve, said Mayor Jason Nichols. TPS will pay $6,000 for its portion.

Dotson said the mitigation plan must be in place to receive reimbursements from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the wake of disasters, such as ice storms or tornadoes.

In other matters, the council approved removal of the “no parking” signs at 120 W. Morgan St. Nichols said the signs were placed there by the city council in 1998, but traffic there has decreased now that the middle school has been relocated.

The council also gave its approval for a local Christmas tree farm to sell wreaths and swags in Norris Park during operating hours of the ice rink.

Also approved Thursday night was the resignation of Kyle Mobley from the police department, and the transfer of Nikki Warren from a part-time secretary at the PD to a full-time secretary at the city’s solid waste department.
