NSU warns of marketing scam

Northeastern State University is alerting local businesses about a scam involving a Texas company that is using the institution’s name to solicit money for T-shirt sponsorships.

Jam Sports Marketing is not affiliated with NSU, is not an officially licensed vendor with the university, and does not have permission to solicit money on behalf of any product bearing the university’s name or logo.

Company representatives have contacted at least one local business by email and solicited $350 for advertising on a sports T-shirt that the representative claimed would be distributed to students on campus.

“Anyone approached by a company claiming to represent NSU and soliciting money using our name should contact the University Relations office,” said Dana Boren-Boer, university marketing coordinator. “Do not give them money until you are certain the company has authority to represent the university.”

Call the NSU Office of University Relations at (918) 444-2010.

Man critical after local crash

A Jay man was listed in critical condition Friday morning after being involved in a crash north of Tahlequah.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol reports state John Robert Burns, 26, was admitted to Tahlequah City Hospital with head and internal truck injuries. Burns’ ability to operate his 2005 Chevrolet Blazer was impaired by alcohol when he ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected and came back across the roadway. He then hit an embankment on the west side of the road and rolled two times.

The crash also injured Jeremy Troy Mallard, 28. Mallard, a Disney resident, was a passenger in the Burns vehicle, and suffered arm and trunk internal injuries. He is listed in stable condition.

Both men were wearing seat belts. The crash was reported at 2:26 a.m., and was investigated by OHP Trooper Steve Meridith assisted by Cherokee County sheriff’s deputies, Illinois River firefighters and emergency medical personnel from Tahlequah City Hospital and Cherokee Nation.
