Area man pleads guilty to making false statements

TAHLEQUAH —

MUSKOGEE – A Sallisaw man pleaded guilty in federal court Tuesday to making false statements.

Daniel Greg Gibson, 51, was charged following a probe by the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Management Standards. U.S. Attorney Sheldon Sperling said the DOL initiated an audit of the labor union’s financial statements, and during the audit, it became evident that a large number of checks were written to various credit card companies over a period of seven years.

In 2008, in response to the audit, Gibson presented two falsified receipts in an attempt to justify some of the unauthorized expenses. Gibson was president of the local chapter of the AFGE (American Federation of Government Employees) union.

U.S. Magistrate Kimberly West accepted Gibson’s plea and ordered completion of a pre-sentence investigation. He will appear in court at a later date for sentencing. He is currently free on bond.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Dean Burris represented the government.
