Man accused of wielding machete set for hearing

TAHLEQUAH — A preliminary hearing has been tentatively set for next month for a man accused of wielding a machete and threatening to kill several people in December.

Bobby Joe Ross, 49, was charged with two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, placing bodily fluids on a police officer, assault and battery on a police officer, two counts of threatening to perform an act of violence, and malicious injury to property.

Ross has pleaded not guilty and is free on a $50,000 bond. Associate District Judge Mark Dobbins has ordered Ross back March 11 at 1 p.m. for a hearing.

According to a report by Tahlequah Police Patrolman Chance Davis, Ross allegedly attempted to stab the tires of a woman’s vehicle using a kitchen knife Dec. 22, 2012.

Davis said he arrived on scene and Ross was wielding a machete and screaming at the officer. Ross was ordered to drop the weapon, but he screamed profanities and began to walk toward Davis while moving the machete upward, Davis said.

Cherokee Nation Marshal Ralph Travis then deployed his taser on Ross one time, and used it again when Ross tried to get the machete back into his hands while he was on the ground.

Ross allegedly continued to fight with officers after he was handcuffed, and threatened to kill several people, including police officers.

Police said Ross told them he would be glad to tell a judge he made death threats against officers.

As a condition of his bond, Ross was ordered to have no contact with the victim of the original call. He could face up to 10 years in prison for the assault charges, if convicted.
