Hulbert to host first Christmas Parade

HULBERT — Santa and Mrs. Claus will be making an appearance in Hulbert the second weekend of December.

Mayor Shirley Teague informed members of the Hulbert Board of Trustees Thursday evening the city will be hosting its first Christmas parade Saturday, Dec. 8, following the theme “An Old Country Christmas.”

“This is the first time that Hulbert’s planned on doing anything like this, and we’d like participation from anybody and everybody who would like to have a float,” she said. “At the city offices and throughout town there will be entry forms, if you plan on putting a float in the parade. We would like participation from the fire department. We would like participation from the churches, the businesses, everybody who can. So far, we have had really, really good responses to it.”

Lineup begins at 5 p.m. near Lake Region Road, and the parade begins at 6.

“We’re going to get Fran Girdner, to be parade marshal,” said Teague.

Four trophies will be awarded to the “four best floats” while patrons shopping in Hulbert businesses will receive a ticket at a chance to win a money drawing held the night of the parade.

“We’re going to come down Highway 51 with the parade, and we’re going to turn down here by the bank. They’ll stop here and let Mr. and Mrs. Claus off, and at that time, we’re going to have a drawing for some money,” said Teague.

A live nativity scene will be featured on the block between Rider Lane and Broadway Street near Hulbert Public Schools.

“One of the churches is going to serve hot cocoa and cider. I think the Reaching Our Hulbert Community group said they were going to serve either cookies, popcorn or something. Hopefully, it will be a big turnout, and we’ll have good participation,” said Teague.

In other business, the fire department is seeking to make application for a loan through Lake Region for a new building. Assistant Chief Carl Dill and Safety Officer Bill Krueger presented the request and noted the initial estimate of cost at $35,000. No action was taken, as board members wanted other estimates and information necessary to determine the actual scope of the proposed construction project.

“We just need them to gather some other details and information on where we’re at and what they’re going to need,” said Teague. “We are in favor of it, though.”

What do you think of Sen. McCain's proposal to allow cable TV channels to be sold a la carte (individually, rather than in bundles with a lot of channels no one wants)? Bear in mind some less popular channels could go by the wayside with no bundling support, and that while overall packages should theoretically decrease in cost, individual channels might cost more.
