Stilwell man killed in truck crash

STILWELL – A Stilwell man died Tuesday night when he lost control of his 2004 Ford F150 pickup and flipped it.

John M. Morton, 56, identified by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, was pronounce dead at the scene by Tahlequah Emergency Medical Services.

Morton was southbound on a gravel county road approximately 12-1/2 miles northeast of Stilwell when he lost control of the truck and ran off the roadway to the left, plowing through a fence.

The truck overturned and came to rest on the wheels. Morton, who was not wearing seat belt, was ejected about 32 feet from point of rest. Officials cite the cause of the crash as unsafe speed for type of roadway.

The crash was reported approximately 7: 20 p.m.

The accident was investigated by OHP Trooper Steve Meredith of the Adair County Detachment and was assisted by Trooper Stan Roedenbeck, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department and Tahlequah EMS.
