TAHLEQUAH —
Summer time often means time for vacation, whether it’s spent relaxing at home or taking a trip elsewhere.
It’s a time to enjoy the local playground, the lakes and rivers, or to pack the car or hop on a boat or plane and see new sights, like where most roses are grown and more than a million a day are exported, Ecuador.
Last-minute plans probably include places within driving distance - Branson, Kansas City, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Dallas or San Antonio.
“It’s hard to book last-minute flights unless you’re prepared to pay an arm and a leg,” said Linda Spyres, with Vacations R Us. “Las Vegas and Branson are always good, though, with good rates.”
Now is the time to plan for fall vacations, Spyres said.
“Put a deposit down for a cruise and pay on it, “ she said. “Lay away to sail away.”
Cruises are always a great value because they include food and entertainment, but not beverages and alcohol.
“You can buy a bottle of wine and they’ll cork it and bring it back the next night,” said Spyres.
For a lot of people the ship itself is the destination. Many passengers stay on board, while others go to port.
“And [cruises are] good for families,” she said. “They all have water parks for kids of all ages, including me. The three-story tall slide is really fun. There are as many adults as kids on it.”
The cruise lines show movies at night outdoors, and for smaller children, they all have Kids Clubs and put the child with their age group. They have child development specialists, not just baby-sitters.
They provide pagers to notify the parents, or if the child gets uneasy.
“The kids love the activities, and parents have time together,” she said.
