TAHLEQUAH — A full recount by hand began Thursday afternoon at the Cherokee Nation Election Commission.
Officials will recount some 15,000 ballots, which is expected to take several hours. One representative for both Chief Chad Smith and challenger Bill John Baker will be allowed to witness the recount.
During hearing proceedings Thursday, it was determined that a hand tally sheet used to record at-large absentee ballots had been misread by election commission officials. A count of the hash marks on the sheet indicates Smith received 57 votes, but when the unofficial count was made, the tally was misread and recorded as 37 votes.
The total – 20 votes – accounts for all but two in question. To view the document, go online to static.cnhi.zope.net/tahlequahdailypress/pdfs/tallyvotes.jpg.
The red highlights the hand-counted tally marks for Smith, totaling 57; the blue circle indicates the hand-written note that was reportedly mis-read when unofficial tallies were presented Sunday morning.
